Vet Day Hurray for Frankie

Today started and ended beautifully. Dr. Gary Darling DVM and his assistant Kelly came and had a full day's work. We are so grateful for their care, abilities and professionalism. Without them we could not run Home At Last.
Don Juan had his foot Xrayed and will be evaluated for the next step.
Lexi's abcessed has healed and is hardly noticable.
Charles has gained a little weight, but is still on our watch list.
Bobbie and Tory are doing well.
New little Cricket has an enlarged udder which may have some serum, but is not infected as of now.
Lucky and Calli are fine.
Dancing Drum, Star and Dunny knew something was going to happen because we had taken part of their stall , fenced it off and filled it with hay. This will be where the surgery takes place. The main reason for doing the surgery here is that Frankie and Moon Dancer are so close we did not want to separate them. The surgery is a major one and Frankie needs all of his attention focused on healing, not worrying about his Moon Dancer. Frankie was given a local anesthesic and soon was drowsy. Kelly had the job of keeping him steady and quiet. Frankie is an amazing boy. He seemed to know everyone was there to help him.

Dr D prepares for the surgery. Please, be prepared for graphic pictures. This was a major surgery to remove a cancerous tumor that surrounds the jugular and carotid artery. There will be blood and pictures of the actual procedure.
Moon Dancer and the others stayed nearby, checking on things periodically.
There were a few tense moments when the tumor was found to be invading the jugular and carotid. Dr D's skill saved this horse's life. The tumor was growing rapidly and would have killed Frankie before too long..
The tumor had invaded a lymph node, but had gone no farther.. Dr D felt that he had gotten all of the cancer, but as with all cancers, there could be cells left. He felt, though, it was no longer an issue.

His stitching would make any seamstress jealous.

Careful examination is important.

Our wonderful intern Savahanna came to help out.

We laughed when we saw her tee shirt about giving blood.

Here are the two tumors that were removed. The larger one is almost fist sized.

Frankie stood still and never made a move. What a great boy.

There was a lot of blood. It is a very vascular area.

During lunch (that my wonderful Jim fixed) I washed Dr D's clothes. We didn't want him to scare his next client.

Frankie is drowsy, but OK.
He got cleaned up.

Hold still. Just a little right here.
As soon as they released him he started to eat. Nothing stops this Oldenburg.
More. Give me more.
Dr D evalutes Star. Everyday that Star can move is a good day. We know one day it will be too much for him, but for now Go Star Go.

Dancer greets Frankie and wishes him well.

After lunch (while the clothes were drying) Skittles was evaluated. She's lost about 75 pounds. her teeth are OK so we decided to put her in with Rico and the calves to fatten her some. She is missing her herd and we don't know how long she will be able to stay there.
Then it was Tiger Lily's turn. She had some sharp teeth in the back and got them smoothed down.
Kelly and Savahanna have much to discuss.

Can you see Tiger Lily's stripes on her legs? Kigers have these.

After a sedative it was time to start working.

Hang in there, girl.

Almost done.
Hey! I'm cute.

It was so hot today the dogs crashed everywhere.

It was under the deck for Mac.

Thank you for the prayers and good thoughts and for the donations. Today's visit will probably be over $1000.00. We have a previous and unpaid bill that is quite large. Any help will be appreciated. Hooray for Frankie!!!!
Thank you Dr Darling and Kelly.
