Good News All Around Except....

First the sad news. My dear old Quest is losing weight- about 10 pounds a month- and we can't seem to stop it. He is in the calf pen now and will get extra extra special food to see if we can do something. Dr. Darling is not hopeful. His teeth are good, but he is having problem metabolizing his food.
Isn't he beautiful? My heart is heavy.
Yesterday Aaron trimmed and reshod Juan. He is doing well.

Aaron has been here two days in a row to care for the animals' feet and will be here again tomorrow. We are so lucky to have him as our farrier. He is dedicated to the care of the animals. He trains the ones who need it and is so gentle with the frightened or sore ones.

This is not an easy job.

Check out those special shoes.
Juan's foot just keeps getting better and better.
Remember before he was walking on top of the hoof.

Dr. Darling and Kate came today. Helen came, also, to help in case we had a viral infection that required a lot of horse moving and care. She was prepared to spend as much time as we needed.
There is no way to thank her for the care and dedication she shows the horses, except to say THANK YOU HELEN so very much.
Turns out Smokey does not have strangles, but he does have a respiratory infection. Dr D took a nasal swipe just to be sure. Smokey got another huge shot and will get them for a few more days, then oral antibiotics for a couple of days. His appetite is back and he is much more lively.
Rosie got new shoes yesterday, too. Of course, I was off somewhere else so there are no pictures.
She is walking much better and has very little pain now. The old girl let everyone know she's not done yet.
After checking Lucky, Smokey, Rosie and Juan it was time to start the dental work. Babe was first. She had a sedative and boy, was she relaxed.

Since she's a Pony of the Americas she is not very tall so Dr D had to get down to her level.

Come on, girl. You can do it.

Babe was really loopy. It took Kate, Helen and Jim to hold her up.

Steady there, old girl.

It was Breezy Summer's turn next. She is a lovely Quarter Horse.

A good dental check is important.

Open wide.

The sedative worked. Hold her up, Jim and Helen

When the dental work was done the girls went in the "drunk tank" to sober up. The calves share their pen and don't seem to mind the company.
In a while the girls were ready to go back to their herdmates.

After Dr D left Aaron did some more shoes and trims. Of course, I was elsewhere when he reshod Smokey. Smokey had foundered twice when he was young and he almost lost his hooves. Aaron has been working on him ever since we got him and has him almost as good as new.
Helen had been working with Gracie. It took a while to get Gracie to trust Helen, but look at them now.

Gracie is so little than Aaron has to bend in half to reach her feet.

What pretty girls.

Look at that dainty hoof.

The next good news is that Jenny and Jessie donkeys are out with the boys- Jonathan and Dobbin. Jonathan doesn't much care as long as there is enough food for everyone, but Dobbin is in love (or lust). Where ever you looked today there were three donkeys.
There they go.
Here they come.

Jeremy came with Aaron and just had to get to know the longears.

It was a mostly great day except for the news about Quest, and of course Charles is on our watch list, too. We are celebrating the good news and trying to accept the sad news. Such is the life on a sanctuary.
