When I got back to the lower barn Jackson was down and I first thought he was finally able to get off his sore feet. Then I realized he couldn't get up. Jim called Aaron and while we waited I wondered where Tucker the mule could be. As you know when an animal is in trouble Tucker is always there.
Aaron arrived and all three of us could not get Jackson on his feet. Then Tucker came in. He reached through the panels to nuzzle Jackson and stayed with us while Dr. Darling gave Jackson his wings. There wasn't a dry eye anywhere. Now, sweet boy, you can really rest and romp and eat the green grass by the Rainbow Bridge. We'll miss you.
Friend Linda came and we shared some weevily COB. She will feed it to wild turkeys.
Then friend Christina from Sunshine Sanctuary came with some donated hay.
Dobbin had come to the gate earlier and asked to be let out. He said hello to St Francis before munching in the garden. How did he know about the upper gate? It is not a place he had been before, but knew it was a good place to get out. He left Jessie and Jenny to meet new friends.
Maybe he knew there would be tasty hay coming in soon.
Baby Jane (age 20) never went to see Jackson once she came here. She was Jackson's daughter. She is friends now with Jonathan and Dobbin and tolerates Gracie.
She ignores Callie.
Christina is the person who gave us our first 2 mules and horse in 2004. Because of her good guidance we became a sanctuary, too. Now she has Santa Cruz Heritage Horses .
There are 3 donkeys, one mule and one miniature horse out and about. Wherever you look some critter is there.
Everyone one loves the donated oat hay, YUM!!!
Gracie is waiting for her share. She may be small but she is mighty.
We had a good visit with Christina with promises to get together more often.
When I came in from evening chores Jim was on the phone with a most delightful man-Dallas Harreld. Dallas is in construction and is a distributor for FCP Buildings. His business is Bloom's Home repair. We are developing a good relationship with Dallas helping Home At Last.
If you can use a good contractor for you or your horses call 916-601-7066. He has been working with animal husbandry since 1964.
Thank you Sequoia and Eileen for your donations.
Tomorrow Helen, Ron, Jim and I are going to look at buildings for the Thrift Store. Start saving your donations. If you clean your closets before Christmas, put your items away for Home At Last.
We have put down nearly 100 horses, but it never gets easier. Each life is so precious and we love them all. How can we do it? It's about the horses, not about us. We do what is right for them, not what is easiest on us.
