A Tough Day For Sugar

When the sun came up this morning little Sugar did not know what was in store for her. None of us did.

Aaron and Amy came over (with Tuffy) to do some trimming.

Tufy snuggled in while Amy and I had a visit. Jim and Aaron were out trying to catch Sugar and Posey.

They made a squeeze and got both girls caught. Then Sugar was tied to a tree to get her feet trimmed. They were so long it was becoming unhealthy.
Posey waited in the squeeze.

Julian didn't know what was going on but he wanted to kiss every one.

Sugar and Maggie had been abandoned and neglected for over 15 years. We bought them to give them a safe home. Sugar led well, but we don't think anyone had ever touched her feet and she's over 20 years old!!

Maggie and Banjoe watched from a safe distance.

Jim stood with Posey to keep her calm. She was due for a trim, too. Posey had been at an auction with a full size man on her, hitting her in the face with a coiled rope to make her spin. She does not trust people at all.

Yes, Banjoe, we love you.

Sugar had a very tough day because she was so frightened.

Aaron kept at it until the worst part was trimmed off. We are going to wait until next week when Dr Darling comes. He'll sedate both girls and the job should be easier on everyone.

When it was all over Amy stayed with Sugar giving her love and treats.

It was hard to see Sugar so frightened, but her feet really needed a trim. Posey drug Aaron around the pen. There was no working on her feet. Next week, girls.

There are 6 mules and 2 horses at Home At Last who have never been handled, or handled so roughly that they cannot be treated safely. It breaks our hearts to realize these great animals have not known a gentle hand or whose memories are only of abuse. Jenny donkey finally after 4 years overcame her fear. Quincy is still afraid after 7 years with us.
I'm sure that Sugar thinks we are terrible, too. We'll try to help her overcome that.
